Truths About Drunk Driving

There are a lot of myths involving drunk driving. Here are two key facts to remember before consuming alcohol and getting behind the wheel:

  • Coffee and other stimulants do not help sober you up. In fact, there are no quick ways to sober up.
  • Just because you’re not visibly drunk doesn’t mean you’re OK to drive. Alcohol affects your driving ability long before you can notice its effects.

What can you do?

Fortunately, you can help prevent drunk driving crashes with a few simple steps:

  • Don’t drink.
  • Encourage friends and family members—especially teens and young adults—to not drink any alcohol and drive.
  • If you’re with someone who is drinking, stop them from getting behind the wheel, if possible.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911.
  • If you are hosting a holiday get-together, offer nonalcoholic mocktails and sparkling juices to your guests.
