The diagnostic imaging department, located at Arbor Health, Morton Hospital offers sophisticated imagery technology to help accurately diagnose and treat a broad array of health problems. Our diagnostic imaging department has expanded several times over the past few years, offering the modalities best suited to meet the needs of our community. Our services include:

Diagnostic Radiology

X-ray imaging is one of the fastest and easiest ways for a physician to view the internal structures of the body. X-ray imaging is an excellent tool for assessing skeletal trauma (e.g. broken bones), and for comprehensive imaging of the thoracic cavity including the lungs and heart. MGH offers Computed/Digital Radiography.

3-Dimensional Digital Mammography (Tomosynthesis)

Arbor Health, Morton Hospital is the only provider of 3-D Digital Mammography in Lewis County. This life-saving diagnostic imaging is the most advanced known today for early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Three-dimensional mammography (also called digital breast tomosynthesis) creates a three-dimensional picture of the breast using x-rays. Several low-dose images from different angles around the breast are used to create the 3-D picture.

3-D mammograms find more cancers than 2-dimensional mammography--and it finds the cancer earlier. With all cancer, the earlier the diagnosis, the better the outcome. Early breast-cancer detection increases the five-year survival rate from 12% to 90%, a staggering difference.

Nuclear Medicine

This division of medical imaging uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and sometimes treat diseases. This includes the ability to:

  • Provide accurate images to help healthcare professionals study organs and tissues.
  • Offer valuable insight about how organs and tissues are at work within your body.
  • And, in some cases, nuclear medicine provides important therapy and a way of fighting disease.

Computed Tomography (CT)

Many people know of CT scanning technology as a CAT scan. CT imagery is special x-ray equipment that uses powerful computers to provide physicians with highly detailed, cross-sectional images of any part of the body. CT imaging can show several types of tissue, including the lungs and other soft tissue, bones, and blood vessels, with great clarity. Using CT scans, radiologists can more easily diagnose cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders.


This imagery equipment uses sound waves to see inside the body, rather than x-rays. Ultrasound is frequently used to examine the body's internal organs as well as to study the vascular system and heart. Ultrasound is also used in obstetrics to visualize and determine the condition of a pregnant woman and her fetus.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

An MRI machine uses magnetic impulses to generate pictures of internal structures. MRI is a safe and painless test that produces very clear cross-sectional or three-dimensional images of the body's tissues, even through bone and other obstructions. Because of its safety and clarity, the MRI is a very valuable tool that aids in the diagnosis of a wide range of conditions. The only thing patients need to do to prepare for an MRI is to remove all metal objects, such as jewelry, before undergoing an MRI scan.


Periodically, our Arbor Health team at Morton Hospital will consult with other certified radiologists through the process of teleradiology. We have the ability to send radiologic images from one point to another through digital, computer-assisted transmission. This gives us the ability to ensure our patients benefit from around-the-clock radiology services.
