Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) - Part-time




The Occupational Therapist Assistant administers occupational therapy treatments to patients, who have difficulty performing daily living and functional activities due to illnesses, injuries, and disabilities in acute care, swing bed-rehab, and the outpatient setting working under the direction and supervision of the Occupational Therapist.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Graduate of an Occupational Therapy Assistant Program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or must be obtained within 30 days of hire through American Heart Association (AHA) or equivalent organization. Occupational Therapist Assistant License by the Washington State Licensing Board.
  • 1-2 years of experience treating patients in an acute care hospital, including Inpatients, Outpatients is preferred. Experience in an outpatient clinic and understanding the different insurance payor guidelines is a plus.

Primary job responsibilities:

  • Helps occupational therapy clients by providing rehabilitative services to persons with mental, physical, or developmental impairments.
  • Provides services under the direction of licensed occupational therapist.
  • Verifies client information by interviewing client; reviews and records medical history, confirming purpose of treatment.
  • Performs appropriate occupational therapy treatments including the use of physical agents and modalities under the direction of the occupational therapist.
  • Helps clients improve their quality of life by helping them improve their function and or compensate for limitations, such as, helping them improve their motor skills in order to accomplish ADL and IADL activities.
  • Follows treatment plans developed in collaboration with occupational therapist by teaching techniques, such as, the proper method of transferring, mobilizing and other mobility and functional movements needed to perform activities of daily living in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Monitors activities to make sure they are performed correctly and provides encouragement, bringing treatment that is not having the intended effect to the attention of the therapist.
  • May measure patient’s range of joint motion, length and girth of body parts, and vital signs to determine effects of specific treatments or to assist the Occupational Therapist in compiling data for patient assessments.
  • Maintains patient occupational therapy records by recording client’s progress for use by the occupational therapist.
  • Appropriately records billing information of services rendered and documented in the medical record.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
  • Performs various clerical tasks, such as taking inventory, ordering supplies, answering telephone, taking messages, and filling out forms.
  • Serves and protects the occupational therapy practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and is compliant with AOTA practice standards.
  • Enhances occupational therapy practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Maintains and grows professional competency by completing or attending continuing education classes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
